Andrew Probert - TV and Film Designer

CONvergence is pleased to welcome designer Andrew Probert as a Guest of Honor at CONvergence 2003.

Andrew Probert's artistic career spans over twenty years, ten of which were spent working on some of science-fiction fans' favorite Hollywood productions.

His Hollywood career began on the small screen as a designer for Glen Larson's Battlestar: Galactica. He quickly moved to the big screen as a major contributor on Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

"Being a fan of the series, however, I was very familiar with the show's design philosophies when the Trek Movie of the Week was canceled in order to produce 'The Motion Picture'," explains Probert. "Joe Jennings (the Art Director) had already put together their version of the "upgraded" Enterprise and a model had been loosely put together. We, on the motion picture team, took on the challenge of providing a look that was beyond that scope of television thinking."

Probert's contributions to Star Trek: The Motion Picture include the Vulcan warpshuttle, numerous props such as the tricorder, and many external features of the USS Enterprise as seen in the first six movies.

Andrew Probert went on to work on a number of television and feature-film projects, including Airwolf and Back to the Future. Probert's final stint in Hollywood proved to be the one for which he is most well known. In 1987 Probert was hired as senior illustrator for Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Andrew Probert was to the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation what Walter M. "Matt" Jefferies was to the original Star Trek television series. He designed the Enterprise exterior, the Enterprise bridge, and nearly everything from the Romulan Warbird to the Ferengi.

Probert has also worked in the video game industry, and at Disney's Imagineering.
