Cinema Rex
Cinema Rex is CONvergence's official film room; a place to relax, be comfortable, eat snacks and watch great films. Cinema Rex takes the idea of a convention film room and spins it into something completely different!
2011 Update:
This year’s theme was a bit of a challenge for Rex. If only he could have gone into the future to see what movies he had chosen in the past...
But don’t fret! As always, Rex listened to your suggestions, poured over piles of titles, logged hours and hours in front of a screen and pulled together a list of great films for you. In addition, he has some special things up his scales this year, including:
Rex is so lucky to be presenting The Dead Matter, a horror film by gothic group Midnight Syndicate. Not only will you get to watch this creepy film with outstanding score (Midnight Syndicate did the official D&D soundtrack!) but we are honored to have director Edward Douglas and actors Brian Van Camp and Jason Carter to talk about the film afterword! This is a can't miss opportunity!
After last years success, Dr. Jim Kakalios will be giving a live commentary to the film Crack in the World. Come early because this one is going to fill up FAST.
Friday afternoon features local and independent shorts by filmmakers around Minnesota and the upper Midwest, as well as the HP. Lovecraft inspired Curse of Yig.
And the awesome local filmmaker and past guest Emily Hagins will again be coming to show her new film!

The Cinema Rex Story
Cinema Rex is a staple of CONvergence. Big screen, great sound, comfy chairs, lots of snacks... simply the place to watch great films.
Why the name "Cinema Rex"? Rex is the name of a long time convention-going dinosaur. He has been a regular participant in the CONvergence
Masquerade and has judged at the CONvergence Masquerade several times! Rex has thought long and hard on
how to best run a film room with a bit of help from his staff, Eric Knight, Michael MacDonald with spouse
duo John and Ansley Grams. Some may think he's full of hot air, but here is what he has come up with:
Comfort
Who wants to sit through a movie in a hard chair, behind someone with big hair and some jerk kicking the back of your seat? Well, you don't have to: Rex has brought in a truckload (literally) of comfy couches, chairs, and love seats for your beleaguered bottoms.
Atmosphere
While he was at it, he scooped up armloads of lamps, coffee tables, and end tables so during the films you'll have a place for your drinks, food, and feet. In between films you won't be blasted out of your seats by fluorescent lighting.
Concessions
What’s a movie without snacks? Candy and fresh popped popcorn will adorn our concession stand. Of course you won't have to trudge all the way to the Consuite to get a beverage; we have our own. And did we mention cookies? Best yet, it's all free!!!!!
Technology
Our screen is bigger than yours. It's hard to take, we know, but it is one of the reasons to come to Cinema Rex. Most of the films projected onto the 10-foot screen will be on the highest quality prints of DVDs to ensure a sharp image. In addition, all widescreen films will be shown in letterbox format. Did we mention surround sound?
Films
In the end, a film room can only be as good as the films it shows. Several factors go into selecting a lineup. We want to show a variety of movies: classics that you may have not had a chance to see, films that are painful to watch on a small screen, let alone pan-and-scanned, films that are fun to see with a crowd, some of Rex's personal favorites-- and of course, feedback from you!
